Peucestas

In the composition:  Peucestas, brandishing the "Shield of Troy," stands over Alexander, attempting to protect the King not just with his person, but also with the wares of the Gods.  Peucestas is ducking a blow from a large Mallian warrior while countering the strike with a leg-whip using the bottom half of his spear and pushing with the Shield of Troy.

Peucestas

A royal Macedonian by birth, Peucestas was a late addition to the Macedonian campaign East, but he did participate in the decisive battle of Gaugamela.  From that engagement on, Peucestas was a favorite of the King, eventually promoted to the Captain of the King's Guard and given possession of the "Shield of Troy," a supposed relic of the Trojan Wars from over 1,000 years before (very unlikely a true artifact from the 13th century B.C.E, but Alexander's young army was extremely superstitious... so indulge them).  As a result of Peucestas' heroism on this day, he was given the Governorship of Persia - from which he was swiftly removed for negligence some six months later.
